Historic Buildings in New Town part of Warsaw
The New Town features many historic buildings dating to XIV century and even earlier. There
are a variety of styles present from baroque to neoclassical.
Palaces are the most spectacular buildings. The most famous is Raczynski Palace built in
neoclassical style. It witnessed several tragic events. On Aug 13 1944 during the Warsaw
Uprising a German tank exploded killing dozens of resistance fighters. In September 1944 the
SS murdered several hundred wounded people that were being housed in the palace.
Another famous palace is the Sapieha Palace - with the Rococo facade. It was built in early
18th century for Sapieha who was a high figure in Lithiuania. This was the time when Poland
having a union with Lithiuania became one of the biggest empires of Europe.
